Why people willingly follow an autocrat is complex and involves multiple factors, including the political, social, and economic. Stories across history offer a roadmap for overcoming hardship, reminding us of leadership courage and unwavering hope that can be cultivated in the face of tragedy. After traveling through so many countries, here’s some life lessons I learned from God.

  1. Life doesn’t always make sense. Each of us has encountered, or knows someone who has encountered, unexpected and unfair challenges, even if there’s no satisfactory answer. Don’t be fooled by charismatic speaker(s) who tap people’s emotions and address fears, frustrations, and hopes in an abusive way. Misfortune happens to everyone—not just the deserving or the undeserving—can be the first step in finding resilience and moving forward.
  2. Scapegoating is not leadership. American’s must not be lured into blaming problems on specific groups, particularly Jewish people, labelling people as communists, re;entlessly talking about the threat from inside, and other minorities. Incitement is the cmompanion of hatred. Current politicians are enamored in creating a unifying “enemy” by offering simple explanations for complex problems.
  3. Intimidation and fear is not a substitute for peace and tranquility. Promising to use the military against those that think different or those who ask questions is not democracy.
  4. Events don’t define us—our response does. Some politicians want Americans to live in grievance and remain in the past. Good leadrship and courage helps people move forward (to the futue). Oftentimes, when we are faced with a similar situation in our lives, we need to have the courage to leave the past behind and move forward.
  5. Everything is not about winning. Triumph of spirit is greater than scoreboards. Victories are nice, but honoring memories and creating a renewed sense of unity is the payoff. Real victory lies in persevering, coming together, and doing our best in difficult circumstances.

With less than two weeks to election, politicians use a combination of economic instability, persuasive propaganda, nationalism, fear, and strategic political maneuvering. These polticians exploited people’s need for hope, security, and a sense of belonging, turning them toward a destructive ideology that will ultimately lead to immense tragedy. Understanding these factors can help us recognize the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and the dangers of unchecked power in society.
